You know what time it is! One Mic Stand is BACK again ON FRIDAY 9TH JUNE for our latest edition! We’re raising the stakes with some sensational guest artists.
For those who aren’t familiar with the format, One Mic Stand is a boisterous night of poetry and music. The night is centred around a Poetry Slam, in which poets are given only 3 minutes each to wow the audience with their lyrical mastery and charismatic delivery to battle it out to gain the top spot and with it, the grand prize of £50!!
In the past we’ve had guest acts such as: Jason Singh, Jenna G, JP Cooper, Ione, Mali Hayes, Ape Cult, Voodoo Black, Mothership Connection, Deepo and Thabo just to name a few.
For the latest instalment of One Mic Stand in May we’re bringing you the critically-acclaimed talents of UK Hip Hop veteran, Ty! Ty is known for his conscious, hard hitting lyrics infused with jazzy, funky beats. His second album ‘Upwards’ was nominated for a Mercury Prize in 2004 and he has shared the mic with the likes of Damon Albarn and De La Soul.
Not only that, we’re joined by singer MICA MILLAR! A passionate and honest songwriter with a distinctly soulful and powerful voice, Mica Millar is an authentic artist with instantly memorable, timeless songs that weave through the genre’s of Soul, Jazz, Gospel and Trip Hop telling stories of life, love and loss.
Plus, we have a live set from INNA VOICE! IV are your friendly, neighbourhood poets and are driven by a mutual desire to tell untold stories, spark debate and make sense of the complex constructs of their inner-city surroundings. Their poetry is inspired by an eclectic mix of artists such as – Khalil Gibran, Mos Def, Billie Holiday, Gil Scott-Heron.
IV’s journey has been supported by the likes of Desiree Reynolds, Johny Berkavitch, Kate Tempest, Zena Edwards, El-Crisis and Roger Robinson and they have opened up for the likes of international spoken word legend Saul Williams, Mercury-Nominated skate Tempest and hip-hop forerunners The Last Poets.
If that wasn’t enough, we’ve got BETTER DAYS DJs bringing that fresh audio goodness on the ones and twos.
